AUDIENCE RESPONSES AND reviews
"Towards the end of the piece they all came together for a trio, although by the feeling of my subpac, it was convinced it was a quartet. The audio was rousing and rib-rattling, urgent and harsh. Energy poured from body to body. And then – it stopped. I didn’t know what to expect but what I take away from NOISE is something I’ve rarely seen in dance before but hold very dear; an exploration of the varieties of ways we experience ‘noise’ as a concept, be it the intrusion of another on our private music-listening moments, or the strong vibrations of a subpac or a dancing body, or even the loud projection of a clothing style… I found NOISE both highly enjoyable and highly accessible, and definitely a concept worth making some noise about."
Bengi-Sue Sirin, Dance Art Journal, October 2022. Full review here
"A strange stylish STRIKING dance trio and visual/sound installation; a study in the perception of chaos, connection, isolation, firing on all cylinders."
Donald Hutera, NOISE immersive performance, October 2022
"Watching NOISE was a multi-sensory experience. As a Deaf person, it was rewarding to see and feel the echo of the deaf experience, via the deaf dancer Chris Fonseca and deaf video projection designer Ben Glover, as well the experience of the others. Yes, dance is visual, but sometimes there is a disconnection to experience the music fully and what music represents. This show fulfils that by the clever use of lighting, projection and the vibrancy of the Subpac on my back. I felt drawn into the visual chao and pushed away at the same time. This is what Noise is all about for me - not being defined by sound alone but your other senses too."
Audience member, NOISE immersive performance, October 2022
"NOISE was an absorbing sensory experience that was unlike anything I’ve seen before. It drew me into the space despite being a digital work I watched at home alone, and it blended media and genre to create something truly new and exciting."
Audience member, NOISE interactive film, May 2022
"Through melding the AR tech and soundtrack together with the performers’ insights (many of whom are d/Deaf themselves), the show pushes the boundaries of what ‘noise’ is. The power of this approach is shocking. Noise could be seismic.
Really, the whole event can be seen as a proof-of-concept: proof that blurring between dance and technology has captivating consequences; proof that art can be both thematically successful and innately inclusive; proof that the concept of ‘noise’ is far vaster than a viewer may initially imagine"
Samuel Nicholls, A Younger Theatre. R&D sharing, December 2020. Read the full review here
“It was an immersive experience, where I had to connect with all my senses. I observed very deep human interactions and connections in an instinctive way, but also in an abstract form.” Audience member at Studio Wayne McGregor. R&D sharing, March 2020
about
How does NOISE feel?
Join Nua Dance for NOISE, a raw and intimate immersive performance for Deaf and hearing audiences. Take a sensory dive into different perceptions of noise inspired by the lived experiences of the performers as people who don’t conform to traditional stereotypes set up by ableism and heteronormativity. A visceral, trippy journey of self-discovery, NOISE embraces the complexities of our lives and celebrates the intensity of physical experience. Featuring vibrating soundscapes and sound-reactive visuals to allow audiences to experience NOISE like never before. NOISE follows the success of an interactive film version commissioned by BBC Arts and OneDance UK for Dance Passion, devised in collaboration with dancers Chris Fonseca, Shelley Eva Haden and Tommaso Petrolo, video designer Ben Glover and sound designer Mike Winship. |
